My approach to psychotherapy

As a therapist, I primarily draw upon psychodynamic psychotherapy to guide my practice. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a relational approach for clients with chronic, pervasive, and maladaptive ways of relating to self and others. As a dynamic- and multicultural-oriented therapist, I pay close attention to the role of interpersonal relationships in people’s lives, the intersecting identifies and the socio-cultural-political context, and the presence of feelings and emotions in the here-and-now. I appreciate the relational and multicultural perspective of psychotherapy because it not only recognizes the patient, the therapist, the place, and the interaction of all, but also offers me a therapeutic way to address transference and countertransference. In doing so, it allows me to provide new emotional corrective experience and new understandings for my patients.
